Belief

Belief In What?

John 6:29 (NIV) Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

Isa 53:1 (NIV) Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

John 20:31 (NIV) But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Belief In The Death & Resurrection Of Jesus

1 Cor 1:18-23 (NIV) For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God... God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.

  • A.W. Tozer: "Our Lord died an apparent failure, discredited by the leaders of established religion, rejected by society and forsaken by his friends. It took the resurrection to demonstrate how gloriously Christ had triumphed."

  • 1 Cor 15:3-4 (NIV) For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

1 Cor 1:21 (NIV) For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

Rom 1:16 (NIV) I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

Belief in The Son of God

John 6:69 (NIV) "We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."

  • A. W. Tozer: "The first Christians believed that Jesus of Nazareth, a man they knew, had been raised to a position of Lordship over the universe. He was still their friend, still one of them, but had left them for a while to appear in the presence of God on their behalf. And the proof of this was the presence of the Holy spirit among them."

  • 1 Ths 4:14 (NIV) We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

1John 3:23 (NIV) And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.

Mark 1:15 (NIV) "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"

    Are We Believers?

Acts 16:15 (NIV) When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.

Mark 9:23-24 (NIV) "If you can?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes." Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief."

Jonah 3:5 (NIV) The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

Do We Really Believe That God Will Do What He Says?

Rom 10:8-9 (NIV) ..."The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart." That is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

1 Ths 2:13 (NIV) And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

1 John 5:1 (NIV) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.

2 Ths 2:13 (NIV) But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.

    Believing Without Limit

Num 11:23 (NIV) The Lord answered Moses, "Is the Lord's arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I say will come true for you."

Gal 3:5 (NIV) Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

Gal 2:20 (Phi) I died on the cross with Christ. And my present life is not that of the old "I", but the living Christ within me. The bodily life I now live, I live believing in the Son of God who loved me and sacrificed himself for me.

Prov 3:5 (Amp) Lean on, trust and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind, and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.

Belief Can Be Difficult at Times

2 Kin 5:10-13 (NAS) ..."Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and you flesh shall be restored..." But Naaman was furious... "Are not the Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not be wash in them and be clean?" So he turned and went away in a rage. Then his servants came near and spoke to him, "My father, had the prophet told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, "Wash, and be clean"?"

  • Oswald Chambers: "Belief must be the will to believe. There must be a surrender of the will, not a surrender to persuasive power, a deliberate launching forth on God and on what He says until I am no longer confident in what I have done, I am confident only on God. The hindrance is that I will not trust God, but only my mental understanding. As far as feelings go, I must stake all blindly. I must will to believe, and this can never be done without a violent effort on my part to disassociate myself from my old ways of looking at things, and putting myself right over on to Him."

  • Heb 4:2 (Phi) For we too have had a gospel preached to us, as those men had. yet the message proclaimed to them did them no good, because they only heard and did not believe as well.

John 11:40 (NIV) Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

Mat 9:28-29 (NIV) When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied. Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you."

    Believing Through Adversity

1 John 5:5 (NIV) Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Dan 3:17 (NIV) "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from you hand O king."

John 14:29 (NIV) "I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe."

1 Pet 1:21 (NIV) Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Rev 12:11 (NIV) They overcome him (the accuser) by the blood of the lamb, and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

    Results of Belief

Luke 1:45 (NIV) "Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!"

Heb 11:6 (NIV) And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Gen 15:6 (NIV) Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Rom 4:24 (NIV) but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness--for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

Rom 3:22 (NIV) This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,

Rom 3:27 (Phi) ...the whole matter is now on a different plane--believing instead of achieving.

Heb 3:14 -15 (NIV) We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion."

1 John 5:10 (NIV) Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.

John 3:36 (NIV) Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."

    Results of Unbelief

Rev 21:8 (NIV) "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters, and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

Jude 5 (NIV) Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.

2 Thes 2:10-11 (NIV) ...They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie.

Luke 18:8 (NIV) ...When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?

John 11:25-26 (NIV) Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
